Authorities Seize 4000kg of Illegal Pangolin Scales in Cameroon

The Pangolin is an endangered species and is considered the most trafficked animal in the world. It is nearly extinct in Asia due to poaching, and traffickers now look to populations in Africa to fulfill the demand for pangolin scales and meat.

The scales, worth over £5m ($6.9M), were seized by customs officials on 26th March at a northern outpost close to the country’s border with Nigerian.

The Eagle Network (Eco Activists for Governance and Law Enforcement) helped Cameroonian customs with the seizure of the shipment.

A spokesperson for the Network said, “Nobody was arrested in connection with the seizure and people associated with the shipment ‘escaped’ possibly due to corruption.”
