Niger Thwarts Coup Attempt, Soldiers Arrested in Plot

Niger authorities say they have arrested soldiers involved in a thwarted coup attempt just days before the inauguration of President-elect Mohamed Bazoum.

Sources on ground say the presidential guard fought off a group of armed assailants who laid siege to the presidential Palace in the early hours of Wednesday.

The attackers, who fled after they were met with gunfire and shelling, were said to be from a nearby airbase.

“The government condemns this cowardly and retrograde act which seeks to jeopardise the democracy and the rule of law to which our country is resolutely committed,” a spokesman for the government said.

He added that arrests have been made and investigations into the identity of the coup leaders are underway.
