Tanzanian Police say 45 people were killed in a stampede in Dar-es-Salaam as people tried to enter a stadium to pay their last respects to the late President John Magafuli.
The stampede was a result of thousands of mourners trying to make their way into Uhuru stadium to bid farewell to the late president whose death was announced on March 17th.
“There were a lot of people who wanted to get in the stadium, and some were not patient. They tried to force their way in and that resulted in a stampede. Forty-five died in the accident,” said Dar-es-Salaam’s regional police commander Lazaro Mambosasa.
Mambosasa added that tens of people were injured in the stampede but most of them had been released from the hospital.
Magufuli’s body was taken to the cities of Dar-es-Salaam, Dodoma, Zanzibar, Mwanza and Geita, before being laid to rest in his ancestral village of Chato in northwest Tanzania on March 26.
