Hackers Gain Access to DHS Emails After Solarwinds Hack

Hackers have reportedly gained access to email accounts belonging to the Trump administration’s head of homeland security (DHS) Chad Wolf and members of cybersecurity staff after the Solarwinds hack.

According to the Associated Press(AP), the breach was not disclosed publicly, the extent of the hack reached other agencies including the US Energy Department.

The Solarwinds breach was believed to have exposed as many as 18,000 entities including vital government agencies by compromising   Microsoft Exchange’s email program.

“The SolarWinds hack was a victory for our foreign adversaries and a failure for DHS. We are talking about DHS’s crown jewels,” said Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee member Sen. Rob Portman on the AP report.

The attack was linked to Russian hackers, specifically the group Cozy Bear, which was allegedly backed and directed by the Russian government.

US President Joe Biden said recently that they would strike back at the hackers soon through a “mix of actions seen and unseen” but did not give further details.
