The party headquarters of deposed civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi in Yangon was firebombed by unknown assailants.
According to witnesses, an unidentified suspect hurled a Molotov cocktail at the National League for Democracy (NLD) headquarters at 4 in the morning.
“When the residents nearby knew about the fire, they called the fire service department to put it out… it was under control by around 5 am. It seems that someone lit a Molotov cocktail and threw it at the headquarters,” said Soe Win, an NLD member.
No one was hurt during the incident while the building’s entrance was the only part of the building that was damaged.
“We have to file a complaint to the police… We do not know who did this, but it is not good at all,” said Soe Win.
There are no details yet on who threw the firebomb but the NLD has been under intense scrutiny from the junta since the start of the February coup due to allegations of election fraud and bribery.
Many NLD members have already been arrested and detained without a warrant while some members are hiding out of fear.
