Robot-Made NFT artwork Sells for Nearly $700,000 in Auction

Digital artwork created by humanoid robot Sophia was sold at auction today for $688,888 in the form of a non-fungible token, or NFT.

Sophia created the art in collaboration with Italian artist Andrea Bonaceto, age 31, whose portraits are known to be quite colorful and feature famous people, such as Elon Musk. Sophia is an AI humanoid robot system that was debuted in Hong Kong in 2016.

The art, titled “Sophia’s Instantiation”, is a 12 second MP4 file that shows Sophia painting a portrait using Bonaceto’s style and references of other paintings Sophia had made. Creator David Hanson calls this process “iterative loops of evolution”.

Sophia gave comment to the press saying that she is “happy” that people are becoming further interested in robotics and that she “is glad to be part of these creativities”.

The buyer of the NFT is not currently known, but both Hanson and art collector Jehan Chu noted a large influx of investors in the digital token space. Chu foresees a bubble for the NFT market but Hanson was excited by the pace of bidding and hopes that NFTs continue to grow.
