Canada has imposed new sanctions on nine Russian officials for “gross and systematic violations of human rights in Russia,” the Canadian foreign ministry said on Wednesday.
“Today, Canada sanctioned 9 Russian officials involved in the attempted murder of Alexey Navalny, his prosecution, and the silencing of Russian citizens who protested his treatment,” Canadian Foreign Minister Marc Garneau said in a tweet.
He said in a statement that the Russian government has repeatedly shown its unwillingness to respect the basic rights of its people and address concerns raised on multiple occasions by the international community.
“Canada will continue to increase pressure on the Russian government to unconditionally release Mr. Navalny and his supporters who have been unlawfully detained,” he added.
Garneau further said that Russia’s “gross human rights violations” will not go unanswered.
