US Senator Chris Coons and Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Demeke Mekonnen have held talks regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) Project.
The meeting took place amidst increased tensions between Ethiopia, Sudan, and Egypt over Addis Ababa filling its Renaissance Dam for the second year.
Mekonnen says he allayed the senator’s doubts about Ethiopia’s commitment to the African Union’s sponsorship of the GERD negotiations.
Ethiopia has had several takes with its Nile valley neighbors, Sudan and Egypt, who have expressed concern about how the GERD construction may lead to water shortages in their countries.
The country maintains that the renaissance dam is essential to its economic development. Officials say the completion of the dam will pull millions of Ethiopians out of poverty.
