UK and South African COVID Variants Confirmed in Rwanda

Daniel Ngamije, Rwanda’s Minister of Health, says the country has detected the first cases of the coronavirus variants which originated from the UK and South Africa.

In a televised address on Sunday, the minister said that the variants were found in international visitors entering the country. Adding that two people tested positive for the UK variant and 10 people had the South African strain.

Ngamije assured the public that the issue was contained stating “to date there is no confirmation if variants are spreading in local community… the travellers have been isolated to contain the spread.”

He added that health officials are monitoring the situation and will conduct contact tracing of the infected travellers.
