The bodies of 15 people have been found handcuffed and dumped in the Haouari area near a cement factory in Benghazi.
Examinations showed that there were bullet wounds on the bodies, which means that this was an execution. Security forces have cordoned off the area as they delve into investigations.
The UN and several local human rights groups have denounced the extrajudicial killing by armed groups in the eastern city.
Although a new unity government tasked with leading a transition to December elections was sworn in on Monday, the country’s eastern region remains controlled by forces loyal to military strongman Khalifa Haftar and the situation remains precarious, with frequent tit-for-tat violence and executions.
