A large group of assailants attacked a military base in Tessit on Monday, leaving 33 soldiers dead and 14 injured, according to the army.
The attack started at about 1:00 pm GMT when about 100 militants on pickup trucks and motorbikes stormed the base in Tessit, 37 miles southeast of Ansongo, near the country’s border with Burkina Faso and Niger.
While offering condolences to the families of the deceased soldiers, the army stressed “the necessity of strengthening the fight against terrorism”.
The conflict in Mali started as a separatist movement in the country’s northern region but has now become a tussle by several armed groups to take control of the central and northern regions of Mali.
