Mexico to Control Migrant Crossings at Guatemalan Border

Mexico will now tighten its security efforts to control illegal migrations in its border shared with Guatemala, sources said on Wednesday.

Sources say that Mexico’s National Guard will be deployed at the border to detain illegal migrants and contain the surge of migrants fleeing poverty mostly in the Central American nations.

A member of the National Guard speaking on anonymity said, “The operations will be more frequent, more continuous and we will be taking part,” Reuters reported.

No further details about the operation were given except that authorities have already started detaining illegal migrants near the border in Tapachula city.

The National Institute of Migration of Mexico said they had no knowledge on the planned operation.

US President Joe Biden has promised a more humanitarian migration policy as opposed to his predecessor Donald Trump, which also led to a sudden increase in migrant crossings.
