Sunshine Mills, Inc. Recalls Dog Food Due to Elevated Levels of Aflatoxin

Sunshine Mills, Inc. recalled certain dog food products due to elevated levels of Aflatoxin that are above the Acceptable Daily Intake Limit.

Aflatoxin is a naturally occurring mold by-product from the growth of Aspergillus flavus.

This can be harmful to pets if consumed in significant quantities.

The recall was initiated after they discovered the aflatoxin levels are potentially above the acceptable limit in these products after a routine sampling was performed by the company.

According to the Food and Drug administration (FDA), the pets that have consumed any of the recalled products may exhibit symptoms of illness such as sluggishness or lethargy combined with a reluctance to eat, vomiting, yellowish tint to the eyes or gums, or diarrhea should be seen by a veterinarian.

The recall included the following:

  • Family Pet Meaty Cuts Beef Chicken & Cheese Flavors Premium Dog Food
  • Heartland Farms Grilled Favorites Beef Chicken & Cheese Flavor
  • Paws Happy Life Butcher Choice Dog Food

The company has also issued point-of-sale alerts to its customers to explain why the product is being recalled. In these notices, the company advises their customers who have purchased the product to not feed it to their dogs or any other animals.

Instead, they encourage their customers to return it to the point of sale for a full refund. They also provide the option to contact them for more information and concerns about the affected product.

No other Sunshine Mills products were affected by this recall. There have been no illnesses reported to date.
