Iran has accused Israel for an attack on an Iranian ship in the Mediterranean on Wednesday, an Iranian expert investigating the incident said.
“Considering the geographical location and the way the ship was targeted, one of the strong possibilities is that this terrorist operation was carried out by the Zionist regime (Israel),” the investigator told semiofficial Nournews.
The state-owned container ship Shahr-E-Kord caught fire on Wednesday while in transit to Europe, but no injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire was an explosive device hitting the vessel, according to spokesperson of Iran’s shipping company Ali Ghiasian.
In a statement on Saturday, Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Saeed Khatibzadeh said that the attack was “a blatant violation of the international law and laws of the seas.”
In a press briefing on Monday, the spokesperson has supported the claim that Israel may be behind the attack.
“The (Israeli) regime’s ferocious and aggressive nature also corroborates this,” Khatibzadeh held.
“That regime (Israel) finds its survival in war, crisis and chaos. Iran would consider all options when it finds out who has been involved in this operation, and will resort to them to protect its legitimate rights,” he added.
