New COVID-19 Variants Discovered in the Philippines

The Philippines has now recorded the new three variants of the coronavirus and a Philippine variant, as daily cases surged to nearly 5,000 over the weekend, the health ministry reported.

The Department of Health (DOH) confirmed that a Filipino who came home from Brazil was found positive for the P.1 Brazilian strain.

Meanwhile, 98 people were found to have the P.3 variant which was first detected in the country this month, and shares the same lineage with the P.1 variant.

“At present, the P.3 is NOT identified as a variant of concern as current available data are insufficient to conclude whether the variant will have significant public health implications,” the department said.

Over the weekend, the department reported a total of 177 cases with the UK variant and 90 with the South African variant.

The department also said, “the DOH emphasizes that correct and consistent adherence to the minimum public health standards will prevent the transmission of these variants.”

The Southeast Asian country now has a total of 626,893 Covid-19 cases with 12, 837 deaths.
