Nicaragua’s San Cristobal volcano has erupted and showered the northwestern city of Chinandega in ash.
The ashfall created zero visibility conditions and prompted businesses to close.
“It was a rapid eruption, a single big explosion and then the volcano spent some 30 minutes spewing gases,” said writer Jorge Lenín Duarte, a cultural promoter in Chinandega.
There were no reported injuries or deaths while the government has not yet issued an evacuation order.
Vice President Rosario Murillo told citizens to remain calm and said the recent eruption was normal.
The San Cristobal volcano has already erupted last month but only created an ash plume.
