Fire Destroys OVHCloud’s SBG2 Data Center in Strasbourg

A fire has destroyed OVHCloud’s SBG2 data center in Strasbourg, France which lead to the outage of at least 3.6 million websites.

The fire broke out at the complex just after midnight and took six hours to bring under control with 100 firefighters being deployed to fight the blaze.

The SBG2 center was totally destroyed while  SBG1 was seriously damaged.

SBG3 and SBG4 however were saved by the firefighters but the whole complex was closed and sealed for safety reasons.

OVHcloud founder Octave Klaba said they will not yet resume operations or restart the remaining servers.

“We don’t have access to the site. That is why SBG1, SBG3, SBG4 won’t be restarted today,” said Klaba.

OVHcloud said that all three staff at the complex during the fire were unharmed.

French authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of the fire and are still investigating the scene.

Among those affected by the outage were Imagify, WP Rocket, Cryptocurrency exchange Deribit, the developers of the video game Rust and many more.

OVHcloud is Europe’s largest cloud provider, with facilities across the region and competes with Amazon Web Services, Microsoft’s Azure, and Google Cloud.

The fire occurred just days after OVHcloud announced their IPO.
