Lab Study: Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine Effective against Brazil Variant

The Covid-19 vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech has neutralized the variant of the virus found in Brazil, based on the results of a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The vaccine was highly effective against the P.1 variant first detected in Brazil, researchers from the companies and the University of Texas Medical Branch reported.

The laboratory study analyzed blood samples of those who received the vaccine and found that it was able to protect against the engineered version of the virus similar to the Brazilian strain.

The Brazilian strain was more transmissible than earlier variants of the coronavirus in the country and may re-infect those with earlier strains.

Said variant was first detected in the city of Manaus in north Brazil in December and has now reached the UK and the US.
