Six people, five civilians and one soldier, were killed when a military detachment was ambushed in Northern Burkina Faso, security sources said Sunday.
The five civilians were part of Volunteers for the Defense of the Nation (VDP), a group of civilian volunteers who help the Burkina Faso army in the uphill battle against the jhadist insurgency that has killed more than 1,000 people and displaced nearly one million citizens.
“The Kourao VDP were patrolling the area and were targeted by armed individuals. A unit went to their aid and came under heavy fire,” said a security source. The source confirmed the opposing side also suffered casualties but did not provide further detail.
Over 1,000 troops from Chad are set to arrive in days to help secure the three-border zone, where Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger meet.
