Ghanaians were hit with a nationwide power outage on Sunday due to a GRIDCo system shutdown
In a statement on the occurrence, the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) said “at approximately 2.10 pm on Sunday, March 07, 2021, a challenge in the power system led to a total system shutdown. This led to an interruption in power supply to all parts of the country.”
GRIDCo added that it is “also working to ascertain the reasons behind the total system shutdown to update the relevant stakeholders.”
Ghana has both hydropower and thermal plants fuelled by crude oil and natural gas, however, power cuts are frequent. Power interruptions in the country sparked civil unrest in 2015.
