Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that authorities had disrupted an attempted hijacking of a passenger jet on Thursday night.
A hijacker reportedly tried to forcefully divert an Iranian Air Fokker 100 regional commercial jet heading from the southwestern city of Ahvaz to the northwestern city of Mashhad into the Persian Gulf.
The area where the hijacker tried to steer were the coasts of Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates which have hostile relations with the state.
Instead of Mashhad, the plane made an early emergency landing in Isfahan.
The IRGC did not say how the hijacker was apprehended but most domestic flights in Iran reportedly have air marshals on board.
There were no reports of injuries during the incident or whether the hijacker caused any damage to the plane.
The identity or motives of the hijacker was not disclosed and it was not stated whether he was armed or not.
