Twenty Dead After Smugglers Threw Eighty African Refugees Overboard

The International Organisation for Migration says at least 20 people have died after smugglers threw 80 migrants and refugees overboard on a voyage from Djibouti to Yemen.

So far, five bodies have been recovered and the survivors are receiving treatment in a Djibouti hospital.

Yvonne Ndege, spokesperson for the International Organisation for Migration. said the boat, which had 200 migrants on it, left Oulebi in Djibouti at 2 a.m.

Survivors report that 30 minutes into the journey, the smugglers noticed the boat was overloaded and began to throw passengers off the boat.

Drowning off the coast of Djibouti have become common as migrants flee poverty and war in hopes of finding work in Saudi Arabia or the United Arab Emirates.
