Angelina Jolie has auctioned a painting by former British prime minister Sir Winston Churchill’s for a record £8 million, on Monday.
The painting from the Jolie Family Collection called the “Tower of the Koutoubia Mosque,” was sold for £8,285,000, a world auction record for Churchill’s works, Christie’s auction house wrote on Twitter.
The work, which depicted Marrakech in Morocco fetched triple its estimate of £1.5 million to £2.5 million.
“This is the only painting created by Churchill during the Second World War,” said the auction house in London.
Before the couple separated, Brad Pitt bought the painting for Jolie in 2011, from antiques dealer Bill Rau.
“The painting depicts the very moment the two world leaders shared as they viewed the majestic landscape of Marrakech as the sun set over the Atlas Mountains, and to know Churchill gifted the painting to FDR after their time together excited me even more,” Rau earlier told CNN.
Another two paintings of Churchill were similarly sold for triple their estimates for a combined £3 million.
