U.S. Authorities Arrest Wife of Drug Kingpin ‘El-Chapo’ for Alleged Drug Trafficking

The U.S. Department of Justice announced on Monday that the wife of Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman Loera has been arrested from an airport outside of Washington for allegedly helping her husband continue to run his drug trafficking organization, also known as the Sinaloa Cartel, while he was in prison.

According to the Justice Department, the 31-year-old Emma Coronel Aispuro was arrested by the federal authorities for her involvement in a conspiracy to distribute cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana for importation into the United States.

Additionally, she was also charged for allegedly helping her husband escape from prison in July 2015.

In the press release, the Justice Department also said that Coronel Aispuro also took part “in planning yet another prison escape” of Guzman before her husband was extradited to the U.S. in 2017. The infamous drug trafficker was then sentenced to life in prison in July 2019.

Coronel Aispuro is expected to make her in Washington’s federal district court on Tuesday via video conference.
