Saudi Arabia has announced that women can join the country’s military. This announcement follows a ruling by the Saudi Ministry of Defence that allowed men and women to sign up using a unified admissions portal.
Available ranks range from soldier to sargeant in the Saudi Arabian Army, Royal Saudi Air Defence, Royal Saudi Navy, Royal Saudi Strategic Missiles Force, and the Armed Forces Medical Services.
Applicants. both male and female, must pass admission procedures, have a clean record, and must be pronounced medically fit for service. Women must also meet special criteria to be allowed into the military.
Female applicants must be within the age range of 21-40 years old, be at least 155cm, cannot be a government employee, must have an independent national identity card, and have at least a high school education. Applicants married to non-Saudi citizens will be disqualified.
The announcement was met with mixed reactions.
