China to Donate 200,000 COVID-19 Vaccines to Algeria

China will donate 200,000 COVID-19 vaccines developed by state-owned Sinopharm to Algeria, Chinese Ambassador to Algeria said on Feb. 18.

Ambassador Li Lianhe told Algeria Press Service that China will donate the vaccines in the next few days and that his country will “continue to provide the support and necessary backing” that Algeria needs.

Algerian Health Minister Abderrahmane Benbouzid said that around 800,000 vaccines are expected from the COVAX program aimed at fair worldwide distribution of the vaccine.

China has been donating its COVID-19 vaccines to countries across Africa, including Congo Republic, Zimbabwe, and Equatorial Guinea.

Algeria began its mass vaccination campaign last January when 50,000 doses of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine arrived.

Algeria has also received 50,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

According to data from Johns Hopkins University, Algeria has recorded 111,418 COVID-19 cases and 2,950 deaths.
