Three Dead After Tornado Touches Down on North Carolina Coast

Three are dead and 10 are injured following a destructive tornado that made its way through Brunswick County in Southern North Carolina.

Authorities reported that many structures have sustained significant damage along Highway 17 between Sunset Beach and Ocean Isle Beach.

The tornado has left some residents trapped in their homes, as well as bringing down trees and power lines in the area. Authorities have said that the extent of the damage is unclear.

Ed Conrow, emergency services director in Brunswick County, said that there are currently no missing people reported and that EMS teams would be checking gas lines for damage early this morning in an interview with The Washington Post.

Conrow would add that the majority of the injuries and fatalities sustained from the tornado occurred in the Ocean Ridge Plantation, an “exclusive and luxurious golf and beach community.” Some of the homes in the area were ripped from their foundation according to local news outlets.

Wilmington NC Fire Department reported that NC Emergency Management has deployed response teams to assist with recovery and search and rescue efforts. The Brunswick Electric Membership Corp. has reported that thousands of people will be without power Tuesday morning.

Brunswick authorities have asked citizens unaffected by the tornado to avoid the area as to not impede EMS workers, with County Commissioner Randy Thompson calling the event “very, very tragic.”
