Chad Deploys Troops to Suppress Border Zone Violence

As the G5 countries meet to discuss insecurity in the region, President Idriss Déby announces plans to station soldiers at the country’s borders with Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso. A similar announcement has been made before, but the act was not carried out.

Heads of state in the Sahel region are meeting in N’Djamena, Chad’s capital, with French President Emmanuel Macron joining the meeting via a video link.

President Déby has asked the international community to support Sahel countries as they battle extremism in the region.

Déby attributes rising extremism in the region yo poverty, saying that young people are enticed by the prospect of an easier life. Déby further stated that development funds would help solve the problem.
