Fuel Tanker Explodes Sparking Blaze Destroying 500 Trucks on the Iran-Afghanistan Border, 60 Hurt

A fuel tanker has exploded at Afghanistan’s town of Islam Qala in Herat province near the Iranian border, causing a large fire that burned down more than 500 trucks on Saturday.

The fire which has now been contained, left at least 60 injured, state media IRNA reported.

According to Younus Qazizada of the Herat Chamber of Commerce and Industries, the incident caused more than $50 million worth of damage.

Iran sent engines and firefighters to respond to the fire at the Islam Qala customs post and opened the border to transport trucks to Iran, IRNA reported.

Herat provincial governor Wahid Qatali said that more than 1,000 trucks have been transported to Iran for safety.

Meanwhile, an investigation would be launched to determine the cause of the incident, the governor added.
