Friday the Biden administration revealed plans to let in 25,000 asylum seekers waiting in Mexico for immigration court hearings, while their cases are ongoing.
The first batch of asylum seekers will be allowed into the U S on feb. 19 they would Be tested for COVID-19 before crossing the border.
In a statement to the press, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said it will begin phase one of a program to restore safe and orderly processing at the South West border.
The DHS’s program will increase their capacity in order to process 300 people a day, says DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. In a talk with National Public Radio.
This move is part of President Biden’s plan to end the Migrant Protection Protocols, which was introduced by the Trump administration in 2019 in a bid to keep asylum seekers out of the US.
