Attacks on Older Asians Spike Amid Racist Coronavirus Rhetoric

Violent crimes against Asians and Asian Americans spiked recently, causing serious concerns for people in the community. The attacks have mainly been targeted at older Asians.

Attacks range from assault and murder to robbery. 84-year-old Vicha Ratanapakdee was shoved to the ground in San Francisco’s Anza Vista neighbourhood. His head struck the pavement, leading to his death two days later. A 19-year-old has been charged with elder abuse and murder.

In the same week, a security camera in Oakland’s Chinatown recorded a man in a hooded sweatshirt tackling a 91-year-old Asian man. The suspect has been arrested and tied to two other attacks. A Vietnamese woman was assaulted and robbed of $1000 in San Jose.

Following the violent incidents, the police is stepping up patrols of the area. Volunteers are also coming out to increase their street presence.

City officials visiting Chinatowns in San Francisco and Oakland Promised to combat the problem.
