An unidentified submarine conducted a Trident submarine-launched ballistic missile test off the coast of Florida.
The missile reportedly descended east of Ascension Island, with a total downrange travel distance of around 5,200 miles.
Florida residents posted photos and videos on social media showing a strange light with a tail flying across the sky.
Some residents speculated that it was a UFO due to its appearance and movement.
“Saw it #UFO #Florida (Hollywood Beach, FL),” said @ChrisEscobar,
Twitter was flooded with sighting reports during the launch until CBS News meteorologist Zach Covey clarified that it was just a Trident-II ballistic missile being tested from a submarine.
“No that’s not a UFO. It was a Trident-II SLBM Missile Test from a submarine off the coast of Florida. The missile test had been scheduled for the past few days and we just so happened to catch it tonight,” said Covey.
It is still unknown which navy carried out the test but the UK and France are known to test their SLBMs in the Atlantic.
The US and UK Navy have not yet released a statement regarding the test while the vessel that launched it remains unidentified.
