Protests broke out in southern Chile on Friday following a fatal police shooting of a local street artist in the town of Panguipulli.
according to local reports, a street juggler was killed by police after refusing to cooperate with a search conducted by two officers.
The shooting was captured on video and widely circulated on news and social media websites.
Protesters set fire to multiple buildings and set up blockades on major streets, causing local police to respond with tear gas and water canons.
Local law enforcement officials claim that the officer used his weapon to in legitimate self defense. The Chilean Government has ordered law enforcement officials to hand over all records of the incident to the Public Ministry, which has formally launched an investigation into the matter.
Members of the Chilean community have taken to social media in an outcry for justice. Writer Pedro Gandolfo took to Twitter writing, “In a police force with a minimum professional level this should not have happened. A shameful act with a tragic result.”
