Haitian President Jovenel Moïse claimed that national security forces have foiled a coup and an assassination plot against him over the weekend.
“I thank my head of security at the palace. The goal of these people was to make an attempt on my life. That plan was aborted,” said Moise.
Moïse said the alleged plot against his rule began Nov. 20 but did not provide further details or any evidence.
Moise also said that 23 people have been arrested in connection with the plot including Supreme Court judge. Wilner Morin but did not reveal the identities of the others.
Before Moise announced that a coup plot was foiled, he was dealing with citizens protesting the extension of his term over the weekend.
Moise defended that his term ends on February 7, 2022 and not this year.
Videos that circulated social media during the weekend showed people out on the streets protesting and burning tires to block roads.
Protesters also reportedly clashed with police who tried to disperse them with batons and teargas.
Despite the announcement of the thwarted coup attempt, several Haitian activists and opposition leaders are still calling on Moise to step down on social media.
