Africa CDC Director Says 16 Countries Interested in AU COVID Vaccine

John Nkengasong, Director of the Africa Centres for Disease Control (Africa CDC), says 16 countries have shown interest in getting the COvid-19 vaccine through the AU’s Vaccine Acquisition Task Team (AVATT).

The goal of the 55-member African Union is to vaccinate 60% of its 1.3 billion citizens in the next 3 years. So far, the AU has secured 670 million doses of the vaccine and plans to allocate them and begin vaccinations in the next 3 weeks.

In an interview with Premium Times, Nkengasong spoke about Africa’s readiness to tackle Covid-19. He mentioned that when Covid first hit the continent a year ago, the countries were unprepared but the continent now has access to PPE and has implemented measures to safeguard against the virus.

The Africa CDC Director also touched on the need for countries to revamp their healthcare facilities so they can cater to people affected by the virus.
