Twitter Blocks Posts Relating to India Farmer Protests

Twitter accounts tweeting or sharing information on the farmers’ protests in India have been blocked by Twitter India.

Activist and journalist Twitter accounts such as Kisan Ekta Morcha, The Caravan India, Manik Goyal, Tractor2twitr, and jatt_junction were reportedly withheld after the Indian government sent a a legal notice to Twitter. 

The Indian government confirmed that Twitter had been asked to block over 250 accounts or tweets that were using #ModiPlanningFarmerGenocide hashtags and other posts allegedly creating disinformation regarding the farmer’s protest in Delhi.

According to the MEITY (IT Ministry), the Ministry of Home Affairs and Indian law enforcement agencies gave them the orders to prevent any escalation of protests.

Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair added that even discussions on threads were being blocked when it was about the farmers’ protests. 

“Many countries have laws that may apply to Tweets and/or Twitter account content. In our continuing effort to make our services available to people everywhere, if we receive a properly scoped request from an authorized entity, it may be necessary to withhold access to certain content in a particular country from time to time,” explained Twitter.
