Al-Shabab Militants Storm Hotel in Somalia, 9 Dead

Al-Shabab rebels have attacked the Afrik hotel in Mogadishu using a car bomb and engaged in a shootout with security forces leaving nine dead. 

The rebels have detonated the car bomb at the entrance of the hotel before storming inside and opening fire on its occupants. 

Somali Police spokesman Sadiq Adan Ali said that officers were able to rescue the occupants and repel the attackers.

“The operation is over now. Nine people including four attackers died and over 10 civilians were injured,” said Ali.

Somali Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble said that former military general Mohamed Nur Galal was among those killed in the attack. 

“I condemn the barbaric attack. General Mohamed Nur Galal will be remembered for his over 50-year role in defending the country,” said roble. 

Among those rescued inside the hotel were the owner and another army general.
