India has donated 500,000 Covid-19 vaccines to Sri Lanka which will prioritize health workers, military and police in Colombo, on Thursday.

The doses of the vaccine will first be distributed to 150,000 health workers and 115,000 military and police officers in six hospitals in the country’s capital.

India’s Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine was received by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and other health officials at the airport in Katunayake, which could vaccinate 250,000 people.

The Serum Institute of India produced the doses.

The Health Ministry plans to roll out the campaign to 4,000 hospitals across the country next week.

Sri Lanka struggles with the current surge in cases which has brought the total to 60,694 with 772 additional cases as of Wednesday.
