India’s Farmers Drive Tractors into Violent Republic Day Protests in Delhi

Republic Day in India was met with protesting farmers, as demonstrations have continued against enacted farm laws by the Modi government.

Farmers drove tractors into Delhi as violence erupted in Tuesday protests.

Protesters were seen breaking into barricades as police met them with tear gas, while some groups of farmers lifted flags in the historic site of Red Fort.

Amid the violent clashes, one has reportedly died when a tractor overturned, while several other police were injured.

The tractor rally was scheduled after the parade for Republic Day, but authorities said farmers started to drive their tractors into the capital earlier than the scheduled time.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah held an emergency meeting following the incident.

The protests on Tuesday have been the latest in the series of demonstrations calling for the repeal of the ‘anti-farmer’ agriculture laws passed in September.
