A family of four, including two children, were killed after Israeli warplanes fired missiles that targeted central Syria early Friday.

A family of four, including two children, were killed after Israeli warplanes fired missiles that targeted central Syria early Friday.

A military official who spoke in condition of anonymity said the missile attack occurred shortly before dawn when fighter jets from Israel flew over neighboring Lebanon, according to the report of Syria’s state news agency SANA.

“At about four o’clock in the morning today, the Israeli enemy launched an aerial aggression with a barrage of missiles coming from the direction of the Lebanese city of Tripoli, aiming at some targets in the vicinity of Hama governorate,” SANA said in its report, quoting the statement of the military source.

In a separate statement, the Israeli military claimed that it downed a drone that had crossed into Israel from Lebanon.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office refused to give a comment regarding Friday’s missile attack.

The Syrian military source told SANA that the attack was targeting several locations in and near the central province of Hama, adding that the country’s air defense system was able to confront and shot down most of the enemy’s missiles.

SANA said the unprecedented airstrike of Israel “resulted in the martyrdom of a family, including a father, mother and two children” on the western part of the province.
