New York Governor Cuomo Asks Pfizer For Direct Vaccine Sales

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has requested Pfizer for direct purchases of the Covid-19 vaccine, over the delivery of fewer doses for the state, on Monday.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has requested Pfizer for direct purchases of the Covid-19 vaccine, over the delivery of fewer doses for the state, on Monday.

In a letter to Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla, Cuomo wrote, “With hospitalizations and deaths increasing across the country this winter, we are in a footrace with the virus, and we will lose unless we dramatically increase the number of doses getting to New Yorkers.”

Cuomo said that he and seven other governors urged the Trump Administration for more doses of the vaccine.

The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Alex Azar said that more was on the way but “the federal government has not acted on that promise,” Cuomo said.

Pfizer said that the proposal to procure vaccines directly from them must first be approved by the HHS.

Pfizer said they are open to collaborating with the health department on a model which will give quick access to the vaccines to as many Americans as possible.

“However, before we can sell directly to State governments, HHS would need to approve that proposal based on the EUA granted to Pfizer by the FDA,” the company said.

Meanwhile, HHS denounced Cuomo’s move and said, “Our top priority is maximizing the availability of safe and effective vaccines in a manner which is responsible, fair and equitable for all Americans, not just to those in New York State.”
