Huge Explosion Tears Through a Building in Madrid

A large explosion has been reported in Puerto de Toledo, Madrid with some reported casualties.

A large explosion has been reported in Puerto de Toledo, Madrid with some reported casualties.

Footage shared on social media has shown debris being blown across a street with thick smoke filling the streets.

The building was reported to be owned by a church group and was occupied by priests and volunteers.

“The priests who live on the fifth and sixth floors are fine. We are trying to locate a volunteer who works with us,” said the vicar general of the group.

There is no confirmation yet on how many have been injured by the blast or whether there were any fatalities.

Nearby residents have been told to evacuate while firefighters and ambulances are arriving at the scene. 

It is still unknown what caused the blast and how severe the damage was.

Madrid Mayor José Luis Martínez Almeida said the explosion might have been caused by a gas leak. 

At least 60 people have now been evacuated from the while rescuers have tallied two deaths and eight injured so far.
