Ethiopian Ex-Foreign Minister Killed in Tigray Conflict

Ethiopia has announced the death of former Foreign Minister Seyoum Mesfin amidst the conflict in Tigray, on Wednesday.

Ethiopia has announced the death of former Foreign Minister Seyoum Mesfin amidst the conflict in Tigray, on Wednesday. 

Mesfin was foreign minister of Ethiopia from 1991 to 2010. 

The Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) said that Mesfin, along with former government officials Abay Tsehaye, Asmelash Woldeselassie, and Colonel Kiros Hagos have been killed in a gun battle. 

The former officials were leaders of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), who are engaged in armed conflict with Ethiopia’s armed forces. 

According to ENDF Deployment Head, Brigadier General Tesfaye Ayalew, the leaders refused to surrender peacefully, state-run Ethiopian News Agency reported. 

Ayalew has urged other members of the TPLF to surrender and announced that efforts to capture other leaders have been intensified.

Meanwhile, five other military officers and regional leaders were captured during the encounter near Tekeze River.
