China’s health authority announced on Monday that Mainland China recorded its largest daily jump in coronavirus cases in more than five months, as new infections continued to increase in the northern Chinese province of Hebei.
According to China’s National Health Commission (NHC), Hebei was accounted for 82 of the 85 new local infections reported on Jan. 10, with two of the new COVID-19 cases coming from the Liaoning province and one from the country’s capital of Beijing.
NHC has also recorded 18 new imported infections from overseas, bringing the total count of new infections to 103, which was China’s highest daily increase since the country reported 127 cases on July 30.
Al Jazeera’s Beijing correspondent Katrina Yu said the new outbreak is one of the “most serious” coronavirus upsurges that the country witnessed in months, adding that the growing number of COVID-19 cases has been causing uneasiness among Chinese officials as celebration of the Lunar New Year approaches.
“We are only a few months away from the Lunar New Year where hundreds of millions of people are expected to make trips across the country in order to spend the week-long holidays with their family so they are really desperate to have these cases, this outbreak, brought under control by then,” said Yu.
