Canada Considers Adding Proud Boys to List of Terrorist Organizations

Canadian authorities are considering adding the far-right political organization Proud Boys to the list of terrorist organizations after the group stormed the United States Capitol last Jan. 6.

National security officials are monitoring and gathering intelligence on groups such as the Proud Boys to consider designating them as terrorist organizations alongside the Islamic State, Boko Haram, and Al-Qaeda, Public Safety Minister Bill Blair said.

“We’re very mindful of ideologically-motivated violent extremists, including groups like the Proud Boys. They are white supremacists, anti-Semitics, Islamophobic, misogynist groups. They’re all hateful. They’re all dangerous,” Blair told CTV News last Jan. 10.

“We’re working very diligently to ensure that where the evidence is available, where we have the intelligence, that we’ll deal appropriately with those organizations,” Blair added.

Blair also said that the U.S. Capitol riots, which members of the Proud Boys took a part in after a speech by U.S. President Donald Trump, were “an assault on one of the most important democratic institutions in the world” and said that it was “clearly motivated by extremism and hatred.”

Being added to the terrorist organizations list in Canada would mean that authorities could seize the group’s assets and impose criminal penalties for helping carry out extremist activities.

However, Blair did not mention when the all-male group will be determined as a terrorist organization.

Parliament Member and New Democratic Party Leader Jagmeet Singh first made the calls for the Proud Boys to be recognized as a terrorist organization, accusing the group of helping execute “an act of domestic terrorism” during the U.S. Capitol riots.

“Their founder is Canadian. They operate in Canada, right now.  And, I am calling for them to be designated as a terrorist organization, immediately,” Singh tweeted, attaching a petition for the call.
