Ugandan Police Confront Bobi Wine as He Announced His Petition to ICC

Police in Uganda confronted popular opposition presidential candidate Bobi Wine during his online press briefing where he announced a petition to the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate alleged human rights abuses.

Police in Uganda confronted popular opposition presidential candidate Bobi Wine during his online press briefing where he announced a petition to the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate alleged human rights abuses.

During his online press conference on the evening of Jan. 7, officers appeared and dragged Wine from his car.

According to Wine, the police fired tear gas and live rounds when they dragged him and tried to arrest him. Popping sounds could be heard from the online briefing.

“I am not even allowed to park on the side of the road,” Wine said while being hauled from the vehicle.

“You are embarrassing the country,” Wine told the police. He also told them that he had broken no law.

“As you can see, I’m being arrested,” he said to the camera.

Wine was later allowed to continue his briefing and to drive on.

Wine said in a tweet that the police arrested 23 members of his campaign team and “impounded the cars.”

The 38-year-old candidate whose real name is Kyagulanyi Ssentamu held the briefing to announce that he filed a petition the ICC to investigate alleged torture and other human rights violations by security forces in the East African country.

According to his 41-page petition, at least 54 people were killed in Uganda when security forces fired live rounds to his supporters who staged protests following his arrest last November.

Wine also told reporters that “many atrocities are being committed on the orders” of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, whom he and other opposition figures have repeatedly called a dictator.

The incident is the latest in an escalating crackdown on him and his team. Security forces arrested Wine several times before with various charges, but he has never been convicted.
