Chinese Embassy calls Uyghur Women “Baby-Making Machines” on Twitter

The Chinese Embassy in the US has called Uyghur women ‘baby-making machines’ on Twitter, drawing criticism from Twitter users.

Citing a news report on the ‘eradication of extremism’ among Uyghurs, the Chinese Embassy said that Uyghur women are now ‘emancipated’ due to the Chinese government’s family planning policies.

“Study shows that in the process of eradicating extremism, the minds of Uygur women in Xinjiang were emancipated and gender equality and reproductive health were promoted, making them no longer baby-making machines. They are more confident and independent,” the embassy said.

The news story published by China Daily, discussed the report published by Xinjiang Development Research Center on the changing demographic factors in the Xinjiang region, where most Uyghur Muslims live.

The report said that birth rates in the region in 2018 have decreased as a result of the “ eradication of religious extremism” which made more people open to the government’s family planning policy.

“The changes were not caused by “forced sterilization” of the Uygur population, as repeatedly claimed by some Western scholars and politicians, it said,” China Daily said about the report.

Four years ago, Xinjiang implemented a policy for couples to have two children in urban areas and three in rural among ethnic groups, according to the news report.
