Three telecommunications towers belonging to Vodacom and MTN were burnt this week. 

This followed a rise of several conspiracy theories, which is connected to the emergence of COVID-19 and 5G technology.

According to Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, the Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, the towers were burnt and destroyed this week in KwaZulu-Natal province.

She also urged police to arrest those who are responsible for the attack.

A range of groups in South Africa have opposed the advent of 5G due to concerns that the radio waves could damage human health.

According to the World Health Organization and Public Health England, there are no adverse health effects that are connected to 5G frequency exposure.

Both Vodacom and MTN have begun releasing 5G across the country last year.

The companies aim to accelerate the roll out once spectrum has been auctioned by the end of March 31.
