This is two degrees lower than the previous cold temperature record that was reported in 1956, when the temperature of -32C (-25.6F) was recorded in Estany-Gento, in Lleida, in northeastern Spain.
The temperature is expected to fall to -11C (12.2F) due to the forecasted heavy snowfall expected throughout central and northern Spain.
