The government of Germany and the majority of the country’s 16 federal states are extending lockdown measures until January 31 to control the spread of COVID-19.

The lockdown extension is anticipated to be officially announced on Tuesday.

Michaela Küfner, Deutsche Welle’s chief political editor, had said that there was a discussion about stricter lockdown measures that are going to be implemented, in addition to an extension.

However, the proposal to keep day cares and academic institutions closed has caused issues in negotiations between the states.

According to the Germany’s Ministry of Culture, the reopening of schools for face-to-face classes will only occur when lockdown measures are loosened.
